Ingredients
- 2 ¾ cups of sifted flour
- 2½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 stick plus 2 tablespoon butter or oleo
- 1 lb. brown sugar
- 3 eggs of hen
- 1 cup chopped nuts
- 1 pkg. Nestles Semi-Sweet Chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
Mix and sift flour, baking powder and salt, set aside.
Melt shortening add brown sugar stir until well mixed.
Allow to cool slightly, add eggs one at a time beating
Well after each addition. Add dry ingredients, Vanilla,
Put in greased pan, 9 x 12 or equiv. Bake at 350 for
25 minutes or 30 minutes. Cook, cut serve and enjoy

Secrets of Success
- This is the exact recipe, with her spelling and quaintness, as given to me by Mrs. Dudley who lived across the street from us in Silver Spring. I never have known why these are called Congo Squares.
- The batter is pretty stiff, so after the brown sugar is melted into the margarine, I transfer to my electric mixing bowl. I do use only margarine in this recipe.
- Of course you can use different varieties of chips. You can also vary the color by using light or dark brown sugar.
